英検1級を取得後に国連英検A級を取得された井手様から、合格体験記をいただきましたのでご紹介させていただきます。英検1級を取得された方の中には、次に国連英検を目指されている方もいるのではないでしょうか。受験される方の参考になりましたら幸いです。ご協力いただきました井手様、本当にありがとうございました。
【はじめに】
私は現在国立大医学科に在籍しており、将来医師として活躍する分野を広げるべく本試験を受験しました。
【面接対策】
1次の筆記試験は英検1級の学力があれば通過するレベルですが、2次の面接は国際関係に特化したもので対策は容易ではありません。特に、純ジャパ・純ドメ・ノンプロと英会話に有利な要素が何もない（平たく言えばただの日本人の）私はとにかくスピーキングに苦手意識がありました。そこで、想定問答を自分で作成した上で、英検1級でもお世話になったNana先生にお願いして模擬面接をして頂きました。
以下、想定問答（再現答案）と結果を示します。
Q. Could you introduce yourself concisely?
I’m 30 years old Japanese male, and I belong to the medical department of the Tottori University. I on a daily basis read medical materials written in English and occasionally talk with foreign researchers. What’s more important is that I ‘d like to become one staff member working for WHO in the future. That’s why I’m determined to take this exam not only to improve my English skill but also to widen my perspective about international affairs. That’s all.
Q. What international affair attracts you most recently?
This topic may be the one which other examinees would reply, but it is Trump shock that attracted me most this year.
Actually, when I was a law department student of the University of Tokyo before entering medical school, I once participated one public lecture by Hillary Clinton, who was Secretary of State at that time, and I had a chance to directly talk with her. It was just a short time but I found her so excellent and full of wit that I thought she would become president in the near future. This year’s vote result contradicted my expectation.
There must be a lot of factors behind this phenomenon, but the fact is certain that many people put more emphasis on Mr. Trump’s populism over intellectualism exemplified by Ms. Clinton.
Q. What role do you think the UN should play to deal with such a problem?
Given the recent trend of anti-intellectualism or ethnocentrism, maintaining international peace and security, which is the biggest purpose of the UN, will be more and more difficult to be achieved, because such a purpose should be basically constructed by altruistic approach.
It is sure that changing this trend dramatically is not simple, but at first the UN should show more willingly towards ordinary people what it has done for world peace. For example, where civil wars caused refugee displacements, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has rendered aids. When children are at risk, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) gave supports. Without such supports, more people would be in a grave plight now.
Through such an enlightenment, ordinary people will gradually get rid of indifferent stance towards other nationals.
Q. What activity would you like to commit if you are to join WHO?
I’d like to commit to the activity of disease control.
Recent Ebola outbreaks in Africa show the benefit of WHO coordination of services to stop this disease from becoming a global epidemic. WHO actions include sending expert medical teams, equipment and supplies for disease treatment. WHO teams train local staff to identify people at risk, care for victims, and safely bury bodies.
World health problems cannot be solved by individual countries. Nevertheless, the Japanese government has been severely criticized by international societies for not having concrete efforts in playing a significant role in solving world issues. That’s why I’d like to do my best to communicate smoothly with foreign researchers in order to make the world achieve the highest level of health.

本番では運良く想定に沿った質疑が行われ、ほとんど返答に窮することなく終了させることができました。特に、東大法学部時代に講演にいらしたヒラリークリントンと言葉を交わす機会があったというエピソードには面接官の方の眼が変わったのが分かり、その瞬間に合格を確信しました。
結果の項目でCommunicationが低いのは、最初のfree conversationでYesとかYearとかしか言えずまとまりのない会話になったことが原因だと思います。英検1級面接でも同じですが、第一印象は大事なのでfreeで使えるフレーズを事前に用意しておけば良かったと反省しています。
【むすびに】
英検１級取得者がその次に目指す資格・検定としては、国連英検以外にも、ケンブリッジ英検、IELTS、通訳案内士など複数のものが存在します。その中でもあえて私がこの検定に目を付け一定の時間を割いた最大の理由は、ともすれば英語「を」勉強することに終始してしまう他試験と異なり、時事問題を英語「で」勉強する試験であったことです。
私を含め、ただの日本人の多くは単純な意味での英語力（語彙の多さだとか会話の流暢さだとか）でネイティブに勝つ見込みは非常に低いですし、その必要性もほとんどありません。しかし、会話の内容や教養の深さで欧米の知識人と渡り合うことは訓練次第で十分可能です。一定の英語力をベースにしながらも、自分の人生を英語屋で終わらせたくない方には、この試験は非常に大きな武器になると信じています。
国連英検にはＡ級の上に更に特Ａ級がありますので、Value English様で英語力と教養を蓄えられた方々とともに、いつかこの難関を突破したく存じます。
