Is reducing poverty the best way to tackle crime?
Tackling poverty will surely lessen the number of crimes, but I don’t think it is the best way to address crimes. There are many reasons, but let me give two.
Firstly, not all crimes are committed by poor people only. Yes, they do crimes, but these are usually just the petty ones, such as theft and shoplifting for survival. Bank robberies and jewelry heist, on the other hand, are carried out by rich syndicates.
Secondly, tackling poverty can never stop terrorism. Acts of terrorism usually root from religious conflicts and indifference. For instance, school shootings in the U.S. and the bombings in New Zealand were due to the holy war by a Muslim sect and hatred of the criminals.
Therefore, saying that, -Tackling poverty can solve crimes. – is a bit discriminatory to the poor. This is because, it is just like saying that poor people are criminals. That in fact, they are only a part of the issue; the most heinous crimes are actually committed by rich and powerful people.
